It didn't take too long for the electric Ja Morant to show his impact in the NBA, taking over his third-ever game and exploding for 30 points, 17 of which came in the fourth quarter, as he forced the Memphis Grizzlies into overtime with two clutch plays.

The rookie point man finished a tough left-handed layup on one end and rejected Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving in the last seconds of regulation to force OT.

But his biggest play would come with only seconds left, diming out a little flip pass to Jae Crowder for the game-winning 3-pointer.

Head coach Taylor Jenkins was immensely proud of his rookie, who proved to be every bit of the floor general he envisioned, finishing the game with nine assists.

“We’ve said to him daily that he’s our engine,” head coach Taylor Jenkins said after the game, according to Omari Sankofa II of The Athletic. “We go as he goes. I think he’s starting to see how defenses are going to guard him. He’s got to be full throttle early on. Credit to him, the last couple of days watching film and in his individual work, working on different finishes. To see him finish at a pretty high level tonight, to be able to complete those attacks is huge.”

Morant became the third NBA point guard to score 30 points and dish out nine assists within his first three career games, making him part of a very special club.

“Obviously he had a heck of a scoring night,” Jenkins said. “But to make certain plays that may not show up in the box score as much, that’s huge for his growth in just a short amount of time. I hit everyone in the locker room and said you have to take all these winning moments, these winning habits and carry them game after game. Because we’ll be in every single game if you commit to that for 48 minutes. And tonight, we forced ourselves to do it for 53.”

The Grizzlies picked up their first win of the season in sparkling fashion, one that will serve as an encouraging sign for the No. 2 overall pick, who is already making a difference this early in his NBA career.
