The Atlanta Hawks secured their offseason choice of shipping Jeff Teague to Indiana and making young Dennis Schroder the point guard of the future by signing him to a four-year, $70 million deal, according to reports.

The team pulled the trigger in a timely contract extension of his rookie deal prior to the Oct. 31 deadline, according to ESPN Senior Writer Zach Lowe.

Had the Hawks fail to extend him, he would have become a restricted free-agent at the end of this season, meaning the team reserved the right to match any incoming offers for him.

While that could have potentially become a nightmare of a bidding war, especially with Paul Millsap‘s impending contract extension in the horizon — the team can now head into the season giving their new starting point guard the financial security he was seeking.

The 23-year-old German international is a blazing-quick guard that can slither through the defense off the dribble and penetrate at will, he's especially gifted in the transition game, where he can carve defenses up with his speed or track shooters around him for open shots.

Schroder is surely the Hawks' point guard of the future, though he's yet to show his capabilities for a full NBA season — he averaged 11 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in 20.3 minutes off the bench last season.
