The Atlanta Hawks are giving Jahlil Okafor another chance in the NBA. After getting waived by the Brooklyn Nets earlier this month following a trade from the Detroit Pistons, the Hawks have now signed Okafor to a non-guaranteed deal for the upcoming season. Via Shams Charania of The Athletic:

This could definitely not work out for both parties, but after all, Okafor is a former No. 3 overall pick who still has potential. In 2020/21 with the Pistons, the big man played in just 27 games due to a knee injury, averaging 5.4 points on 12.9 minutes per night. In fact, across the last seasons, he’s featured in just 57 games.

The Hawks have their main man at center in Clint Capela, but past him, their depth is limited at the position. Okafor could prove to be a solid backup when Capela needs a rest. The former Duke standout’s best campaign came way back in his rookie season in 2015/16, putting up 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest. He’s also capable of playing power forward if need be.

Okafor is still just 25-years-old as well. There’s more left in the tank but it will simply come down to if he can stay healthy enough. But if he can’t prove his worth with the Hawks, then Okafor could find himself on waivers once again.
