The Atlanta Hawks are going with a mix of young and old in their starting lineup. First-year head coach, Lloyd Pierce is pegging Trae Young and Vince Carter for the team's opening-night matchup against the New York Knicks, according to JuliaKate E. Culpepper of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Hawks fans will probably get tired — if they aren't already — of hearing about the age difference between Young and Carter this year. Young is 20 years old and Carter is the equivalent of an NBA dinosaur at 41 years old. It's easy to forget, but Carter was once a bona fide superstar. He can mentor Young and help the lead guard adapt to the trials and tribulations of the NBA.

Young is the future in Atlanta. The Hawks gave up the Slovenian wunderkind Luka Doncic and put their faith in the dynamic point guard who evokes memories of Steve Nash on the “Seven Seconds Or Less” Suns.

The starting lineup is rounded out by Kent Bazemore, Taurean Prince, and Alex Len. Pierce guarded his starting lineup preferences initially, but Monday he released his lineup for the team's opener against New York.

The Hawks are going into New York shorthanded. Second-year forward John Collins is working his way back from a non-surgical procedure on his ankle and will miss the Madison Square Garden showdown on Wednesday.

Atlanta won't contend for a playoff spot this season, but they have the young talent to keep fans excited during a painful rebuild.
