Atlanta Hawks rookie Trae Young showed glimpses of his star power during the preseason, but the rookie caught a quick glimpse into what it means to be under the microscope after turning in a 14-point debut performance on only 35.7 percent shooting from the floor in a humbling 19-point loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday.

“Humbling is the word,” head coach Lloyd Pierce told Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports regarding Young’s performance. “Patience.”

Young registered six rebounds and five assists, but turned the ball over four times in the loss. Knicks rookie forward Kevin Knox faced a similar fate, tallying 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting from the floor in his debut coming off the bench.

The Hawks guard didn't necessarily agree with his coach, but offered understanding of what it could take to put his stamp in the NBA.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say humbling, but it’s a learning experience,” said Young. “First time playing in the Garden, first time playing against these guys. I’m trying to get a feel for everybody.”

Young will have his share of struggles due to his frail frame and pronounced defensive woes at this level, something that will take time to come along during the extent of his rookie season with the Hawks.

The Oklahoma product has already shown flashes of brilliance with his passing and shot-making, but he must first put them together with consistent defense to secure his spot as the long-term starter for longer than this season.
