Atlanta Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce was named to the USA Basketball Men’s National Team coaching staff on Monday. San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich is the head coach of the national team.

Pierce replaced Indiana Pacers head coach Nate McMillian, who withdrew from his position.

“It's an honor to receive this opportunity to represent our country and to work with such great coaches and staff,” said Pierce, via NBA.com. “My family and I are excited about and committed to enjoying this journey.”

Meanwhile, Jerry Colangelo — managing director of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team — is happy to have Pierce as part of the coaching staff, citing that the Hawks coach ‘is really a good addition.'

“He has demonstrated the ability in particular to be an outstanding defensive coach. Also, it was evident during our time together in Philadelphia that he was a strong leader, players respected him a great deal. I think we’re fortunate to have someone of his abilities. I think he’s really a good addition,” said Colangelo.

Lloyd Pierce just finished his first season as head coach of the Hawks. Atlanta went 29-53.

Before he joined Atlanta, Pierce was an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers for four seasons.

Team USA will compete in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China which starts on Aug. 31. The 2020 Summer Olympic Games take place in Tokyo, Japan. Team USA is the heavy favorite in both events.
