It sure looks like Trae Young is excited to have Dejounte Murray running the Atlanta Hawks backcourt with him come the 2022-23 season. In fact, he sees bigger things ahead for the franchise with the former San Antonio Spurs star in the fold.

Speaking with NBA TV during the Summer League, Young did not hesitate sharing his high expectations with the Hawks after trading for Murray. He knows what his god friend is capable of, and there is no doubt in his mind the arrival of the 25-year-old makes them title contenders.

“I just know what type of player he is. I know what he can bring to our team. I wanna win championships in Atlanta. I think he can ultimately help take us to that level. We've been in the playoffs, we've been on a run, but I think he can take us to that next level,” Young shared when asked about Murray and why he wanted to team up with him.

Even when the Hawks and Spurs were discussing a deal for Dejounte Murray, there were talks about how the two guards had interest in playing alongside each other. They ultimately got their wish, and clearly, they couldn't be more ecstatic.

Of course it remains to be seen if Trae Young and the Hawks can really get over the hump after some incredible showing in the playoffs. To recall, while they suffered a first-round exit in the 2022 postseason, they remain the team that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals back in 2021.

Murray is an All-Star, so his addition is definitely a massive boost. Nonetheless, in a conference where the likes of the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks reside, making it to the NBA Finals is easier said than done.
