The Atlanta Hawks are bringing back veteran wing Vince Carter, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

Carter, 42, will return to the Hawks for his 22nd NBA season and his second with the Atlanta franchise. The 6-foot-6 wing was iffy on coming back to the Hawks, previously mentioning how he wanted to ensure he could still compete and play basketball without being relegated to a benchwarmer role.

Per Woj, Carter's signing comes with an expectation that he well retire at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season.

Carter averaged 7.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 76 appearances (nine starts) for the Hawks last year. He also shot 41.9 percent from the field, 38.9 percent from behind the 3-point arc and 71.2 percent from the free throw line.

While Carter wants to get significant playing time, he'll no doubt play a part in mentoring and developing the young players that crowd Atlanta's roster. Just this offseason, the Hawks selected De'Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish in the first round of the 2019 draft, with second-round selection Bruno Fernando out of Maryland in tow.

Hunter and Reddish are both wings and would go a long way from having open ears to Carter's words of encouragement.

Carter entered the NBA in 1998 out of North Carolina, a draft-day trade for the Raptors. He lit up arenas with electrifying feats of athleticism and dunks, and in recent years, he has gone on to play for the Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings.
