After re-signing with the Atlanta Hawks last summer, NBA veterans wingman Vince Carter announced his forthcoming retirement following the conclusion of the 2019-20 season. Carter might have well played his final NBA game on March 11, 2020 — in a home overtime loss against the New York Knicks — depending on whether the season resumes after a hiatus or not.

VC spent 22 seasons in the NBA, capped by highlights like being the early face of the Toronto Raptors, winning Rookie of the Year, and earning eight All-Star selections with Toronto and the New Jersey Nets. Despite all of his personal achievements, Carter never won an NBA championship.

However, according to the Hawks small forward, it doesn't bother him as he never chased a ring either.

Per Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated:

“It just wasn't my thing. It's just something that I wasn't interested in doing. I mean to be a part of a team where I feel like I can help out, and play some minutes, is what I wanted to do,” the Hawks vet said when asked why he never chased a ring.

“I just wanted to play. You know? Yes I could lend my wisdom, and be an unbelievable mentor for guy. But sometimes showing is better than telling. You know? What you're talking about in game situations, or positioning. Whatever the case may be. So it was just kind of one of those things that I just didn't want to do, and I don't think I could handle. I would be miserable as a player. Just because I love competing. I mean, anybody who watches me play, I can't just sit down and just watch the game.”

Despite Carter's assertion that he never chased a ring (signing with an already-great team in free agency and pushing them over the top), the former Tar Heel did spend multiple seasons on great teams, like finding himself traded to a Nets team a year removed from going to back-to-back NBA Finals.

Further, in his late-stage career, Carter signed with the Dallas Mavericks in the fall after the Mavs won their first championship in 2011. He also spent time with a Western Conference-contending Memphis Grizzlies squad.

It's true that Vince Carter could have tried to sign with more competitive teams before his retirement, but the Hawks forward certainly had his chances at rings in his storied Hall of Fame-worthy career.
