Atlanta Hawks power forward John Collins will participate in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest this upcoming weekend and he won't have to travel far to get advice from one of the best to ever do it. Really, he'll be within shouting distance of teammate Vince Carter, who has delivered some of the most iconic memories the competition has ever seen.

So when Vince Carter offered up some advice for the 21-year-old Collins, he kept it simple: “Don't miss.”

Despite the bizarre scoring system that seems to permeate the Slam Dunk Contest each year, that does, in fact, seem like sound advice. After all, it's rather hard to pile up points when the ball doesn't go through the hoop.

John Collins has established himself as a budding young star in the league by averaging 19.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest in under 30 minutes per game. One of his biggest attributes is, unsurprisingly, his bounce when attacking the rim.

At double Collins' age, Carter is still going strong in the league. Atlanta may not be getting set for a playoff push over the season's final two months, but that makes the glitz and pomp of the Slam Dunk Contest all the more alluring.

Will Collins break out an ode to his teammate and try to stick his elbow through the rim? How about going between his legs for a jam? The game may have changed since Carter's time in the Slam Dunk Contest, but legends always seem to know best.
