On Tuesday, a fairly damning report on the Los Angeles Lakers was shared today by ESPN, and in a wide-ranging discussion about the team, it was revealed just how much went wrong in trying to rebuild the Lakers brand. One specific piece of the story has even drawn the eyes of Atlanta Hawks Omari Spellman.

According to one piece of the story, the Lakers had planned on taking Spellman with their 25th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, with everyone in the war room essentially expecting the pick to be made. However, Rob Pelinka reportedly made a late change, and selected Moritz Wagner with the pick instead.

While many were shocked, Pelinka’s alleged reasoning behind the switch was that he heard negative things about Spellman, and Josh Hart – a teammate of Spellman’s at Villanova – had corroborated the stories. Taking to Twitter to address this, Spellman tagged Hart in a tweet and hoped that the issue wasn’t true.

Shortly after, Spellman once again tweeted, saying that he had spoken to Hart and that it had been a misunderstanding, but that the incident was “unfortunate.”

Of course, that’s just one of the many shocking things to be seen in the Lakers story, and goes to show just how dysfunctional the organization has become in recent years. Where the team used to be one of the pillars of the NBA and a team that was routinely competing for titles, they have since been forced to watch as other teams have taken that mantle.

With LeBron James now in the fold, the Lakers are likely hoping that the addition of one of the best players in the world will help bring the team back to the limelight, and it will be interesting to see if the team can get back to its winning ways, especially now that Magic Johnson and Luke Walton are gone.
