The term “Father Time” has been loosely thrown around the association these days, but Vince Carter seems to defy that distinction. Playing in what will be his final year of an illustrious NBA career that span 22 seasons, the 42-year-old legend out of North Carolina officially made his 2018-19 campaign debut for the Atlanta Hawks versus the Detroit Pistons on Thursday.

A free agent prior to the start of the season, most were surprised when Carter opted to re-join the youth-laden Hawks squad instead of joining a contender, for a bid to get a championship before he hangs it up. Some nostalgic fans were even hoping for a possible reunion with the Toronto Raptors.

Carter, of course, relishes the opportunity to impart his knowledge to Atlanta’s roster brimming with promising young talent.

Just to put the massive age gap between Carter and his teammates in perspective — “Vinsanity” is 22 years older than the team’s starting point guard Trae Young.

Carter is old enough to be the father Young, Kevin Huerter, and Cam Reddish, who weren’t even born yet when was drafted fifth overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 1995 Draft. De’Andre Hunter and John Collins, meanwhile, were only six and nine months old, respectively,  at the time.

Carter is even a year older than Young’s actual father, Rayford Young, who is only 41 years old.

Despite the mileage, Carter was still one of the most serviceable players off the Hawks’ bench last year. He normed 7.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1,1 assists on 39 percent shooting from three in 76 total games played.
