Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade doesn't hold a ton of grudges, but he still has one that hurts, not winning the MVP award for the 2008-09 season. He and Gabrielle Union were doing an Instagram live answering questions and he was asked who should win this years MVP award.

He went on to say that it was a very close race and both James Harden and LeBron James deserve to win it for different reasons, but he was very glad he didn't have a vote. He said every year there are two guys who deserve it, and in 2009 there was an MVP award that has his name on it, but it also doesn't have his name on it. Union asked if he was over it, and Wade said he definitely wasn't over it.

In that season Wade had a special year, but he actually didn't even come in second in the voting, Kobe Bryant did. James ran away with the award receiving 1172 points, compared to the 698 that Kobe received and the 680 that Wade received.

Wade statistically had one of his best seasons in a pro. He averaged 30.2 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game. As good as those stats were, the one place he went wrong was in the advanced stats.

According to Open Court:

“LeBron James led the league in Offensive Win Shares, Defensive Win Shares, Win Shares, Win Shares Per 48 minutes, Box Plus/Minus, Offensive Box/Minus and Value Over Replacement Player. He was 3rd in Defensive Rating, 2nd in Defensive Win Shares and 5th in Defensive Box Plus/Minus.”

“Dwyane Wade was 4th in Offensive Win shares, 3rd in Win Shares, Box Plus/Minus Offensive Box Plus/Minutes and Value Over Replacement Player.”

It was the advanced stats that ended up doing Wade in, but he obviously still thinks that he was robbed of the award.
