Miami Heat guard Dwayne Wade made a special appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show to surprise James Shaw Jr, who was the hero that stopped the mass shooting at a Waffle House in Tennessee.

Shaw Jr. was the hero who disarmed Travis Reinking when he opened fire on the restaurant. Four people were killed and many more wounded but without Shaw who knows exactly how many people would have been killed, but it would have been a lot more. According to USA Today:

“Shaw said he ran toward the bathroom when the gunfire rang out. Then, realizing he was trapped, Shaw rushed the shooter as he was reloading, grabbed the hot barrel of the AR-15, disarmed the shooter and threw the gun over the Waffle House counter.”

While appearing on the show Ellen asked Shaw who his favorite basketball player was, to which he said Dwyane Wade because of the way he carries himself off the court. Wade then walked out and presented Shaw Jr. with a $20,000 check.

“I know you don't want be called a hero, but I look at you as an American hero,” Wade, said. ” … When I sit down with my kids, and I sit down and talk to them about role models, who I want them to look up to, I'd tell them to go look up James Shaw Jr.”

Wade has always been known for his work in the community so it's really not a surprise that Wade was so willing to appear on the show, and present the check.
