The NBA is set to enter its free agency, but Miami Heat big man Kelly Olynyk decided to bypass it and remain with his current team.

The Heat power forward/center became the latest player to skip free agency, and has exercised his $13.6 million player option for the upcoming season, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The 29-year-old Olynyk signed a four-year, $50 million deal with the Heat back in July 2017, and now enters the final year of his contract, and will become a free agent at the end of the 2020-21 season. Olynyk, who was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, spent his first four seasons with the Celtics before joining the Heat in 2017.

In his third season in South Beach, the former Gonzaga Bulldog averaged 8.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, shooting 46.2 percent from the field and a career-high 40.6 percent from beyond the arc. As a backup big man to rising star Bam Adebayo, he helped Miami finish with a 44-29 record and the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, with the team eventually reaching the NBA Finals but ultimately falling in six games to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Olynyk’s decision to opt into the final year of his deal will leave Miami with an estimated $22 million in cap space, per Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. If Olynyk does return to the Heat, Pat Riley and the team’s front office still have decisions to make regarding bringing back free agents Goran Dragic, Jae Crowder, and fellow center Meyers Leonard for next season.

The Heat selected Memphis big man Precious Achiuwa in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft last night.
