New Miami Heat assistant coach Malik Allen believes that it is improper to call him a “big man coach” after recent reports labeled him as such when he was brought into the franchise. Allen said that being tagged as a coach for big men is quite “limiting” and inaccurate.

“It is limiting in some ways,” Allen said via Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. “I mean, because at the end of the day, you get into this to coach. You don’t get into this to coach, like, big men. You get in to coach the game.”

Allen was hired by the Heat to replace Juwan Howard, who accepted a head coaching position with Michigan. It would be some sort of a homecoming for him. The new Heat assistant coach quite familiar with the franchise, having played more than three seasons in Miami during his playing career.

The 41-year-old said that he is every excited to work alongside Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra and team president Pat Riley, who coached him for two seasons in Miami. He is no stranger to coaching, as he was also an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons for four years before getting a brief stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves last season.
