The Miami Heat have sent shooting guard Dion Waiters to the G League so he can get more practice time as he recovers from ankle surgery, according to Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel.

The Heat are expected to recall Dion Waiters on Sunday when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves at home.

With practice time limited this time of year, the Heat have sent Waiters to their developmental-league affiliate, the G League Sioux Falls Skyforce, for practice sessions Friday and Saturday, with a return scheduled for Sunday in advance of the Heat's game that night at AmericanAirlines Arena against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Skyforce are in the midst of their winter break in the wake of last week's G League Showcase in Las Vegas, with ample practice time at their facility in South Dakota. The Skyforce do not play again until Sunday, when they have a road game in Des Moines, Iowa.

Dion Waiters underwent left ankle surgery in January. The scoring guard only played in 30 games last season, averaging 14.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest while shooting 39.8 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from the 3-point line.

It has been a long, grueling recovery process for Waiters, but it looks like he is close to playing in his first NBA game since January.
