In terms of offensive might hierarchy in the NBA, this is how it goes: there are the Golden State Warriors, then the Houston Rockets, then the Toronto Raptors, then several mid-tier teams, then after a little bit more of scrolling down the stats page, there’s the Miami Heat in a cluster with some of the worst scoring teams in the league.

In other words, the Heat are not an offensive juggernaut. They are scoring just 102.5 points per game, and they do not play on a fast tempo either, as Miami is only just 26th in the league in pace.

On Monday night, however, Erik Spoelstra’s crew put up a historic offensive effort, setting a new franchise record for most points in a game during a 149-141 double-overtime win at home over the Denver Nuggets, as noted by Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald.

Of course, the two overtimes, along with Denver’s pathetic defense, helped the Heat jack up their scoring total. Miami shot 54.9 percent from the floor, and hit an astounding 20 three-pointers on 55.6 percent accuracy.

With Dwyane Wade and Hassan Whiteside both sidelined, James Johnson and Kelly Olynyk formed a tag team on offense to carry most of the load for Miami. Johnson scored 31 points and had 11 rebounds, while Olynyk had a night to remember also, setting a new career high in points with 30 on the strength of an efficient 11-for-16 shooting.

The Heat will next get the New York Knicks at home this Wednesday. The Heat are 5-5 in their last 10 games at home against the Knicks.
