The Miami Heat have won three titles under Pat Riley's leadership—either as head coach or team president—and Riley thinks their current squad isn't far from adding another ring.

The Heat used this NBA-free Wednesday to release taped video comments from the 75-year old Hall of Famer on the state of the team. “I want to build a championship team. I don't have much patience. I want to build another championship. We're close.”

Miami (41-24) occupies the no. 4 seed in the East, and Riley and Heat fans are understandably encouraged about the team's ceiling.

“We didn't really know how great Tyler Herro or Kendrick Nunn or Duncan Robinson, Chris Silva at times, a lot of our young guys, Derrick Jones Jr. [were going to be]” Riley admitted. “And having Goran [Dragic] and having Jimmy Butler, having Bam being around for three years, and having Meyers Leonard and his infectious personality, Kelly Olynyk, we had a very, very good basketball team, very well coached.”

“Maybe we need another player. Maybe we need less, I don't know … We're right there. We're a contender,” Riley acknowledged.

According to Spotrac, the Heat are projected to have about $18 million in cap space for the 2021 free agency (though post-pandemic cap estimates are hard to gauge). Riley is expected to make a run at Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo if he hits free agency.

Riley also said he believes completing the season is a “very important thing for all of the franchises” and offered support for Commissioner Adam Silver. “The COVID-19 is serious. The attitude we all have to take as a country, is to follow the science of our local and our state and our federal government and do the best we can…People are getting a little bit antsy right now — I get that, that’s human nature — but we have to hunker down until we can make sure everything is safe,” Riley advised.
