After handing team president and head coach Stan Van Gundy his walking papers earlier this month, the Detroit Pistons are busy searching for his replacement in the front office. Among the rumored candidates for the job is former NBA player Shane Battier, per Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel.

Battier is currently serving as the Heat’s director of basketball development and analytics, a role he accepted in 2017. The Heat granting permission for the Pistons to have a discussion with Battier could be taken as a sign that Miami is willing to let Battier go assuming that the next position he’ll have is better than what he has right now. Before reuniting with the Heat via a front office spot, Battier worked as an analyst for ESPN.

Battier played for 14 seasons in the NBA from 2001 to 2014. He was drafted by the Vancouver Grizzlies sixth overall in 2001 and played for the team until he was traded to the Houston Rockets in 2006. He would later be traded back to the Grizzlies before rounding out his career with the Miami Heat with whom he won two NBA titles.

Apart from Shane Battier, the Pistons are also looking for other candidates such as Kiki VanDeWeghe and Brent Barry, per Adrian Wojnarowski.

Battier was known for his mix of basketball savvy and intelligence on and off the court. Back in his days playing for the Duke Blue Devils, Battier was named to two Academic All-American team. He was also awarded the Academic All-American of the year back in 2001.
