Longtime New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist had spent the entirety of his 15-year career with the club, until now.

The Rangers bought out the remainder of Lundqvist's contract, effectively making him a free agent. It has not taken long for the future Hall of Famer to find a new team.

Henrik Lundqvist inked a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals on Friday, giving the former Stanley Cup champions some stability in goal after the Caps parted ways with Braden Holtby, who just joined the Vancouver Canucks.

The 38-year-old will not be the starter in Washington, but he should be one of the most high-profile backups in hockey.

Lundqvist fills what Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said Tuesday was a need for a veteran to back up 23-year-old Ilya Samsonov and signals the end of Braden Holtby's tenure in Washington. The 31-year-old became a UFA on Friday after 10 seasons with the Capitals.

Henrik Lundqvist became the face of the Rangers during his long tenure in New York.

The veteran won the 2011-12 Vezina Trophy as the top goaltender in the NHL, and he has also been a finalist on four other occasions. He also finished third in the voting for the Hart Trophy during that 2011-12 season.

But Lundqvist has seen his time dwindle in the past few years.

New York turned to youngsters Igor Shesterkin and Alexander Georgiev for the better part of this past season, resulting in the fewest games, starts and wins of Lundqvist's career.

The Capitals will hope Henrik Lundqvist can be a valuable second option in goal as they hope to recapture the glories experienced in 2018.
