It's been a wild ride, but Frostburn Studios' seminal Heroes of Newerth will be shutting down its servers in June of next year.

The server shutdown was announced through the game's Facebook page. In the post, it was revealed that Frostburn Studios plan to close the servers once and for all on June 20, 2022. Having launched on May 12, 2010, the game will finally draw its curtains eleven years and one month since release.

Gold Coins will start to be phased out on December 13, 2021. New accounts will only be creatable until December 31, 2021, after which, players will no longer be able to do so. There will be farewell events within the game leading up to the final closing of servers.

Heroes of Newerth is one of the first new MOBA games that followed up on the successful Warcraft III map Dota All-Stars. It was released roughly a year after League of Legends, and was released a full year ahead of Valve's very own Dota 2. Yet, Heroes of Newerth was then considered to be the future of the genre, having stellar graphics for its time and even innovated on the genre (after exhausting the conversion of its source material.)

Many Dota 2 pros had their roots in competitive HoN, as the two games share a lot of similarities. In fact, it served as a bridge for pros between Dota All-Stars and Dota 2, playing HoN during the odd years between HoN‘s launch and Dota 2‘s Beta Release. Among these pros include two-time TI champions N0tail, former champions s4, PPD, as well as the likes of Kyle, Jenkins, Fly, H4nni, EternalEnvy, and zai.
