When asked what the Hornets could do to improve after falling to the Miami Heat in Game 2 today, head coach Steve Clifford didn’t hold any punches.

Clifford pointed to a variety of reasons that his team didn’t win, but he wanted to make one point clear — the loss didn’t stem from anything the Heat was doing to beat his team. Rather, he pointed to his own team’s individual mistakes, saying that an inability to perform the fundamentals of the game is what caused the loss.

“It’s one-on-one stuff,” Clifford said in a post-game press conference. “Sometimes you just have to do the basic things better.”

He went on to say that often, coaches are asked what adjustments must be made in order for a team to correct a loss. Clifford was adamant that many losses come down to the fundamentals and which players are able to make buckets and perform efficiently. While laying into his own players for not performing to their highest ability, he reminded the reporters that sometimes it isn’t as simple as just making an adjustment.
