The Charlotte Hornets are moving closer and closer to making the decision on their next head coach, and according to the Charlotte Observer, Boston Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga has emerged as a strong candidate.

For Larranaga, his name is a household name around basketball because he is the son of Miami Hurricanes head men's basketball coach Jim Larranaga. He, however, is more than just a son to Jim, he has made a name for himself because of his coaching.

Right now Larranaga is a top assistant to Brad Stevens as the Celtics currently have a 2-0 lead over the Philadelphia 76ers in their second-round series.

Jay played college basketball at Bowling Green before going overseas and having a nice playing career in Europe. After retiring from playing he was an assistant for the Ireland national team for one year. He came back to the states and was the head coach of the Erie Bay Hawks of the NBA G League for two years. He was then hired by the Boston Celtics in 2012 as an assistant coach and has moved up to the top assistant. He also was an assistant for the Ukraine national team for a few years while an assistant for the Celtics.

Even though the Hornets have him at the top of their list, it isn't for sure that he would accept if offered the job. According to Chris Forsberg of ESPN, Larranaga also interviewed for the opening with the Atlanta Hawks in the last few days.

If Larranaga was hired he would stay on with the Celtics as an assistant until their playoff run was finished and then take over as head coach.
