The Charlotte Hornets have had some trouble staying in the playoff picture in recent years. However, the team is hoping to change its fortunes in trading for center Dwight Howard and signing point guard Michael Carter-Williams.

Unfortunately, Williams had to undergo procedures on both knees in August. Without a set timetable for his return, the Hornets may consider using rookie guard Malik Monk to run the point, according to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer:

“Carter-Williams’ injury could also mean more minutes for first-round rookie Malik Monk to experiment at point guard in the preseason. Monk’s position in his one season at Kentucky was shooting guard, but Clifford would like to explore whether the 6-3 Monk has the skills to handle some point.”

The Hornets selected Monk with the 11th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft as a scoring combo guard out of Kentucky. While he did not play much point guard, if any, in college, Monk's skill set and uncanny explosiveness could help him thrive in the right system.

Charlotte already has its bonafide point guard in All Star Kemba Walker. However, the team struggled to score with Walker on the bench. If Monk can prove himself as a floor general in the preseason, do not be surprised to see him slide into the backup point guard role in Williams' absence.
