The Charlotte Hornets have exercised their fourth-year option for third-year big man Frank Kaminsky, per Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.

Kaminsky, 24, was the Hornets’ ninth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft and will remain under contract with Charlotte until 2018-19.

Kaminsky has been used primarily as a back-up big man during his time with the Hornets, who have needed his ability to provide offense off the bench. He averaged 11.7 points per game last season, which was actually third on the Hornets behind guards Kemba Walker and Nicolas Batum. He has career averages of 9.6 points with 4.3 rebounds in 19 starts through 161 games.

The Wisconsin product was projected to be a dangerous long-range shooter coming out of college, although he has had some difficulty finding consistency with his shooting. He has shot just 40 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc through his first two seasons.

However, Kaminsky started this season shooting the ball much better. He’s averaging 14.2 points on 46 percent shooting from the field in 29 minutes per game.

With Batum still out injured and rookie Malik Monk in the midst of an early-season slump, Kaminsky will have to continue that sort of production in the coming weeks to help Walker carry the load offensively for the Hornets.
