Dwight Howard of the Charlotte Hornets recalled the infamous awkward interview with his former head coach Stan Van Gundy from their days with the Orlando Magic. It was so awkward that the big man tagged the experience as the worst day of his life.

Howard was the guest at ESPN's The Jump, where he recalled the interview with Van Gundy during a tumultuous time in their respective career.

The context was that Van Gundy just told several reporters that Howard wanted him gone as head coach. Van Gundy said then:

“When it comes out that one of the highest-profile guys in the league has asked his coach to be fired, it's going to be a story,” Van Gundy tells reporters, shortly before Howard walks up on the media gathering.”

After which, the towering Howard suddenly appeared from behind and wrapped his arm around Van Gundy, after being prodded by several media people to show that he and Van Gundy are doing alright and that there is no tension between them. The interview went on, albeit awkwardly. It was obvious that Howard was not aware what was going on. A month later, Van Gundy was sacked as head coach of the Magic.

Howard recalled the incident. He said he never expressed his desire to get Van Gundy sacked:

“The first question is like ‘Dwight, they said you wanted to get Stan fired.' I was like ‘Oh, my God,' ” Howard recalled. “That was literally the worst day of my life. We had a game that night. And that was the worst game I ever played. Like, I could not hit the basket for nothing. And you would have thought — I don't know what was going on that night, but it was the worst ever.

“That day, they said me and Stan had has some beef or something like that, where I wanted him fired,” “And I was like ‘What? I never said that.' “
