The Charlotte Hornets were not sure what they were getting when they signed Kelly Oubre to a two-year $26 million contract this past off-season. He had been somewhat of an enigma to this point in his NBA career. While playing for three teams in his first seven years in the league, Oubre has flashed potential as a scorer and as a defender but for every time he seemed to turn the corner there was another disappointing performance. Also, losses had followed the young forward from the Washington Wizards to the Phoenix Suns (pre-Monty Williams) to the Golden State Warriors. Tonight, he had another one of the outstanding performances and it was so good that it might have people forgetting about the terrible ones for a while.

The eight made three's are the most in a quarter since Kevin Love had eight in 2016 and the second-most in a quarter all-time, behind only the 9-9 performance that Klay Thompson had in his record-setting 37-point quarter in 2015.

Oubre is having the best season of his career and most of it can be attributed to his improved three-point shot. Despite playing around the same amount of minutes for the Hornets as he has averaged for his career, Oubre has scored almost five more points per game (16.2) than his career average (11.9.) That includes a 36.7 percent mark from three, up over three points on his career average of 33.3 percent. If Oubre can improve at the line and hit some more of his free throws (65 percent), he might end up as a 20-point per game scorer in 2021.
