LaMelo Ball had one heck of a season opener for the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night, leading his team to a tough 123-122 win at home.
LaMelo finished with a team-high 31 points built on 7-of-9 3-pointers and added nine rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. The crafty playmaker has been anointed as the savior of the Hornets, who have languished at the bottom half of the NBA in recent years.
Judging by his latest remarks in a story by Joe Vardon of The Athletic, it seems LaMelo is in it for the long run with the Hornets. He said he refuses to take the super team route like what LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Paul George, among others, have done.
“I feel like I still kind of got that mentality that they had back in the day. Even with the switching teams and stuff, they never used to do that. You go to one team, you stay there.
LaMelo, who's not even legally allowed to drink, also embraces his responsibility as the Hornets' third overall pick last season. The reigning Rookie of the Year knows the significance of sticking with a squad and helping it develop from the ground up.
“You supposed to just go to a team and build from there—I feel like that’s how it should be. Especially when you like a high pick too, most likely going to a team that wasn’t as good, so you try to make them better. I feel like that’s the whole process right there.”
With the Hornets already locking up win no. 1 this season, expect LaMelo Ball to ball out even more in their upcoming games.
