Charlotte Hornets rookie LaMelo Ball is a magician with the bounce pass.

In the Hornets' final preseason game against the Orlando Magic, Ball threw a perfectly placed long bounce pass between two defenders to Malik Monk for the open layup.

LaMelo Ball is entering the NBA after being drafted by the Hornets with the third overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Ball did not play in college, instead opting to play overseas and in the short-lived Junior Basketball Association.

Ball, along with his brothers Lonzo and LiAngelo, have been the subjects of a lot of controversy due to the outspokenness of their father, LaVar Ball. Melo and his brother Lonzo are the only pair of brothers to both be selected in the top three of the NBA Draft.

The 2020-21 NBA season will begin next week with a shortened season. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the stoppage and restart of the 2019-20 season, the upcoming campaign has been pushed back from its normal October start to December–all while still having a shorter offseason than most years.

As a result of the accelerated start, rookies like LaMelo will be forced to learn on the job and will be thrown into the fire much quicker than they would be normally. After all, the preseason has been reduced and the NBA Summer League where rookies get acquainted to the NBA game had been canceled.
