Developers of the smash-hit video game Returnal, Housemarque, is now a part of PlayStation Studios. After proving themselves more than worthy of being at the top of their game, what’s next for these two companies?

On July 29, 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment finally went ahead and announced that they had bought Housemarque for a disclosed fee. Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst announced the news on the PlayStation Blog. He expressed the thrill of having another great company part of their family.

In an interview with British GQ, Hulst says about the company: “I have been a fan of Housemarque since the studio’s early days when they introduced Super Stardust HD to PlayStation fans. Housemarque’s recent release of Returnal proves the studio is one with incredible vision. Capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community.”

Ilari Kuittinen, Housemarque’s co-founder and managing director wanted to use this opportunity to break new grounds. “After more than 15 years of successfully collaborating, we’re excited to amplify our potential even further and join PlayStation Studios,” says Kuittinen. Housemarque will join the global development operation of PlayStation Studios and will be the 13th studio to join PlayStation Studios. The company operates in Helsinki, Finland.

PlayStation Studios also acquired Insomniac Games (Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart) in 2019 for $229 million before acquiring Housemarque. A couple of Spider-Man games later, it proved to be one of Sony’s best business decisions to date. Although the future is unclear, here’s hoping Housemarque will be just as successful.
