Cleveland Browns safety Damarious Randall has been ruled out for his team's Week 2 matchup against the New York Jets on Monday night as a result of a concussion, according to Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Randall practiced on Thursday and Friday, but he arrived at the Browns' facility with concussion-like symptoms on Saturday morning and was placed in concussion protocol.

The 27-year-old logged four tackles during the Browns' Week 1 loss to the Tennessee Titans last Sunday.

Randall, who played his collegiate football at Arizona State, was originally selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round (30th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He spent the first three years of his career with the Packers playing cornerback before being traded to the Browns for quarterback DeShone Kizer in April 2018.

Cleveland then moved Randall to safety. He excelled in his first season with the Browns, playing in 15 games and registering 85 tackles, four interceptions, a fumble recovery, and nine passes defended.

Randall is part of an impressive young Cleveland secondary that also includes cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams.

While his loss is certainly significant in a vacuum, the Browns should be able to manage without him on Monday evening, as the Jets are going into this matchup without their starting quarterback in Sam Darnold, who is battling mono.

Trevor Siemian will be starting in Darnold's place, and while he has experience as a starting signal-caller in the NFL, his numbers are mostly lackluster, as he has thrown for 5,686 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions while completing 59.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 79.9 over 24 career starts as a member of the Denver Broncos.

The Jets scored just 16 points in their season opener at home last week with Darnold under center, so it's hard to imagine their offense will be any better with Siemian.

Not that the Browns can't use all of the help they can get defensively after allowing 43 points to the Titans, but chances are, Cleveland's defense won't be that abysmal this week.

So, while Randall's loss would ordinarily be a big deal, the Browns shouldn't need him to beat the Jets.

Now, if he is out beyond Week 2, then it becomes a more significant problem.
