How Did Genshin Impact Make $250,000,000? And Why It’s So Addicting.

Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact, the free-to-play action role-playing game, has clocked in nearly $245 million in player spending during its first month. This monumental success has helped make Genshin Impact one of the biggest mobile game launches in history.

The game allegedly raked in around $60 million on its opening week alone, and the numbers don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Genshin Impact has since topped the Top Grossing Mobile Games charts within a few weeks. The mobile game from miHoYo has surpassed Honor of Kings from Tencent, PUBG Mobile from Tencent, Pokémon GO from Niantic, and Monster Strike from Mixi.

miHoYo successfully captured the attention of players around the world primarily because of their amazing game design. The luscious vast open-world found in Genshin is full of quirky characters and equally quirky monster encounters. The core mechanic responsible for Genshin Impact’s fiscal success is the game’s gacha system.

Genshin Impact features a wide cast of pre-made playable characters. Unlike usual RPG games, players are unable to create their own characters to use in the game. The numerous premade characters come in different designs and playstyles which offers diversity in gameplay and aesthetic. Players can unlock any of the game’s characters through its gacha system, which works similarly to loot boxes in many western games. Those who want to chase after the characters they absolutely want to be part of their party can choose to spend real money to get more lottery chances to get the characters. This is essentially Genshin’s bread-and-butter. The enormous $245 million purchases logged in by the game come solely from microtransactions. It absolutely helps miHoYo that the character designs are often appealing which only adds to the enticing nature of the gacha system.

China is the current largest market for player spending on Genshin Impact. The massive mobile gaming country is responsible for over $82 million in spending to date. That number translates to around 33.5% of the total revenue of Genshin Impact.

The game has spread far and wide, even making it into the realm of professional esports. Earlier this week, a League of Legends world champion allegedly splurged money on Genshin Impact. The spending spree from DAMWON Gaming’s Cho “BeryL” Geon-hee supposedly took place the night their team won the world championship.

miHoYo has seemingly cracked the code on a successful modern game. Genshin Impact has an amazing world design, bright colorful characters, an engaging combat system, and more importantly, a way for players to spend actual cash to get the characters they want. Genshin was designed for success and it looks like it won’t be slowing down any time soon.
