The Jacksonville Jaguars went 6-10 in 2019. It was another disappointing season for a franchise that can't seem to figure out its direction. Once again, they head into an offseason needing to make changes and improvements.

With changes, new players will be coming in. Of course, that means some old ones will have to leave. Who could be a surprise roster cut this season? How about tight end Geoff Swaim?

Jacksonville had a lot of tight ends on the roster at some point in 2019. In fact, an absurd seven different tight ends caught at least one pass for the Jaguars last season.

However, no one had a particularly fantastic season. I'll go even further. None of the tight ends had even a good season. James O'Shaughnessy led the tight ends in catches (14), yards (153) and touchdowns (2). Those aren't really great numbers. He gets a pass because he appeared in just five games. The same can't be said for some of the others though.

Jacksonville will likely keep three, maybe four tight ends heading into 2020. Any more than that just seems unnecessary. O'Shaughnessy is likely safe. You'd have to imagine Josh Oliver is as well. Oliver had three receptions for 15 yards in four games in 2019. However, he was also a third-round pick in 2019 and the potential is high with him.

After that though, everyone is fair game. This doesn't even take into account that Jacksonville could look to free agency or the draft to make another addition. Whether they make an addition or not though, the Jaguars will want to make some cutbacks here. And might look to save some money doing so.

I mean, with the production they got from this position in 2019, something needs to change, right? And why pay decent money for those types of numbers.

Geoff Swaim

With that in mind, Geoff Swaim is definitely on the chopping block. He appeared in six games for the Jaguars. Within that time, he had 13 receptions for 65 yards.

Injuries ended his season early, including a concussion. Still though, even in six games, those numbers were disappointing compared to what was expected of him. Averaging five yards a catch isn't going to keep many people their jobs.

Meanwhile, Swaim isn't a terrible blocker. He is not nearly proficient enough if this area to make up for the porous receiving stats though. Finally, the contract. There are four tight ends currently set to be paid in 2020 for the Jaguars. Swaim is one of them. The other three are O'Shaughnessy, Oliver and Charles Jones (a 23-year-old rookie who had one catch for five yards in four games).

O'Shaughnessy, Oliver, and Jones combine for a $2,533,601 cap hit in 2020. Swaim alone is a $3,987,500 cap hit. Is Jacksonville really going to feel like he's worth all that extra money? Especially when they can keep the other three for so much cheaper? Or find another player in the draft or free agency, possibly for less than Swaim?

He was brought in the last offseason to make a difference at tight end. After 2019 though, Jacksonville might want to move on from Swaim.
