The Jacksonville Jaguars may have announced quarterback Blake Bortles as the starter for the 2018 NFL season finale. However, he is well aware that his future with the team is still unknown.

All signs point to Bortles' inevitable departure after the season. He admits it is tough being kept in the dark, via the team's website:

“The toughest part about it is you have no idea,” Bortles said. “It’s not like anybody tells me anything or talks to my agent and tells me what they’re going to do with me. It’s kind of just unknown. … Obviously I’m here right now and I’ve got one more opportunity to play this week and finish this year out. They’re in control of what happens to me next. Whatever happens I’ll be ready. I signed a contract here for three years. I have every reason and purpose in my mind to play here for that amount of time or until they let me go, and I’ll figure that out.”

Bortles' unease is certainly understandable. There had been plenty of speculation regarding his status the franchise quarterback in Jacksonville due to his fluctuating performance over the past several years. However, the Jaguars finally seemed ready to commit when they rewarded him with a three-year, $54 million deal after he helped take them to the AFC Conference Championship.

It is clear that the Jaguars have since soured on the deal after an underwhelming 2018 campaign. His abysmal performance ultimately spurred head coach Doug Marrone to fire offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett a day after benching Bortles in favor of quarterback Cody Kessler. The Kessler experiment certainly did not work out as Bortles returned under center during Jacksonville's win over the Miami Dolphins last week.

It would be unfair to place the entirety of the offensive struggles on Bortles' shoulders. However, the former third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft has had more than enough time to prove himself. It is safe to assume that he will be headed elsewhere this offseason.
