Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette had an incredibly disappointing 2018 campaign, rushing for just 439 yards and five touchdowns while averaging a meager 3.3 yards per carry over eight games.

Fournette's performance was so poor, as a matter of fact, that he was actually benched late in the season, and some wondered if his short time with the Jaguars was already up.

In Fournette's defense, he did have some injuries throughout the year, and Jacksonville head coach Doug Marrone made sure to point that out when talking about his halfback on Wednesday.

“I think last year obviously was tough with the injuries,” Marrone said, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “I think anytime you’re young, and you have a lot of expectations put on you, I think when you have some injuries, it’s tough to deal with. It’s a tough situation for anyone, not just Leonard. I think after the season was over, obviously, it’s been noted we sat down and spoke — he and I — and I really believe he’s in a good place. He’s been in the building. He’s been working out, working hard.”

Marrone then added that he still thinks Fournette has a major role within the Jags' offense.

“I just see Leonard Fournette playing a major role in what we’re trying to get accomplished and being a workhorse for us and feeding him the ball and making sure he’s practicing as a three-down back,” Marrone said.

Fournette entered the NFL in 2017, and in his rookie season, he totaled 1,040 yards and nine scores on the ground.
