The Jacksonville Jaguars are officially set to move forward into the 2020 NFL season with quarterback Gardner Minshew as their starter. Regardless, there is plenty of speculation regarding their interest in bringing in another starter-caliber option under center.

The Jaguars could be looking to usher in some competition at quarterback this offseason. While general manager Dave Caldwell acknowledged that having a surplus of talent at quarterback is crucial, it is not an attempt to light any sort of fire under Minshew, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:

“I think you always want someone there to push and challenge him and also for security and to be able to sleep at night because as we all know we learned last year you’re eleven or twelve plays away from losing your starting quarterback for a large portion of time,” Caldwell said. “So last year we went into the season and Nick Foles got injured eleven plays into the first game of the season and that’s where kind of the Minshew Mania took off from there, so you always want to have some type of depth at that position, someone to come in and push the starter. Gardner doesn’t need anybody to push him. He is incredible, he’s got incredible desire to compete at the highest level, and I think his teammates see that and they feed off that.”

Caldwell's comments are certainly understandable considering the Jaguars are all too familiar with the importance of shoring up some quality depth under center. They were seemingly set to usher in the Nick Foles era at quarterback until he suffered a broken left clavicle in the season opener and effectively made way for “Minshew Mania” to take over.

Minshew's emergence provided them with an opportunity to get rid of Foles' deal while shoring up a fourth-round draft pick. Of course, it is safe to say that he is still far from a finished product. Having a veteran option around not only helps secure quality depth at the game's most important position, it could also help pay huge dividends for the second-year quarterback's development.

The Jaguars reportedly have serious interest in former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton to serve as a potential stabilizing factor behind Minshew. Regardless, Caldwell's comments indicate that the team is comfortable with the prospect of having two potential starters to work with.
