The Cleveland Browns have succeeded in their attempt to trade away Cody Kessler. The Browns have agreed to deal the third-string quarterback to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2019 conditional seventh-round pick, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Browns drafted Kessler, 24, in the third round of the 2016 draft. After Robert Griffin III went down to injury within the first few weeks of the season, Kessler got the opportunity to start for Cleveland. He went 0-8 as a starter and played nine games overall as he finished with 1,380 yards, six touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 92.3 passer rating for an awful and overmatched Browns team.

Kessler possibly could’ve played more games if he didn’t suffer a concussion which gave Griffin the opportunity to reclaim his starting spot later in the season.

But despite his adequate performances as a rookie, Kessler was relegated to third-string QB last season. Rookie DeShone Kizer took over as the starter, and even when he got hurt, Kevin Hogan was picked to play over Kessler. He featured in just three games last year, going just 11-of-23 for 126 yards, no touchdown, and one interception.

The Browns have now completely reset their quarterback situation once again this offseason. They’ve dealt both Kessler and Kizer, who went to the Green Bay Packers, and have brought in veterans Tyrod Taylor and Drew Stanton to mentor whichever rookie quarterback the Browns decide to pick in the draft.

As for Kessler, he’ll get a much greater opportunity to play in Jacksonville backing up starter Blake Bortles. He’ll take Chad Henne’s spot as Bortles’ stand-in after the veteran went to the Kansas City Chiefs.
