The Jacksonville Jaguars have the third-fewest unrestricted free agents to worry about signing this offseason. However, their decision regarding wide receiver Allen Robinson will be the biggest one they will make.

According to Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union, the Jaguars will likely use the franchise tag on wide receiver Allen Robinson if they can’t come to terms on a long-term deal.

Robinson suffered a torn ACL in Week 1 against the Houston Texans. Despite making it all the way to the AFC Championship Game, the Jaguars significantly missed Robinson’s ability as a go-to receiver as Kelan Cole, Allen Hurns, and Marquis Lee were unable to provide a consistent enough target for quarterback Blake Bortles.

Robinson had a breakout year in 2015 as he caught 80 passes for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns, which led the entire NFL. He took a sizable step back in 2016, but at just 24 years old, he’s shown enough upside that it shouldn’t be much of a question whether the Jaguars should try to keep him.

It remains to be seen whether the Jaguars are ready to commit a long-term contract to Robinson despite not getting the chance to see him play post-injury. That’s why the Jaguars slapping him with the franchise tag seems like the most likely outcome this offseason.

It would be the best of both worlds for Robinson to still get paid while the Jaguars will get the chance to see whether he is still the player worth committing serious money to after his injury.
