Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead is out for the season as a result of his second hospitalization due to COVID-19-related symptoms.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Armstead has “suffered from a variety of complications connected to the virus, including significant respiratory issues,” resulting in two different stints in the hospital.

The Jaguars have placed Armstead on the reserve/COVID-19 on two occasions this season, most recently in early September. At the time, head coach Doug Marrone said he couldn't “put an exact timetable” on the halfback's recovery, though he did predict that “he'll be out a while.”

Armstead is expected to return to full strength for next season. The 23-year old is in his second year with the Jaguars, who drafted him in the fifth round (no. 140 overall) in 2019. As a rookie, he ran for 108 yards on 35 carries and he caught two touchdowns.

The Jaguars hoped Armstead would be a major contributor to their rushing attack in 2020. After the organization released Leonard Fournette prior to Week 1, Armstead suddenly had an opportunity to become the team's primary ball-carrier, but his diagnosis prevented that from happening.

Rookie James Robinson has carried the load in Armstead's absence. The undrafted free agent has 362 yards on 85 attempts (4.3 yards per carry), plus 23 receptions for 207 yards. Overall, he's scored four TDs for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars also have Devine Ozigbo and Dare Ogunbowale on its depth chart at running back.

The Jaguars (1-5) visit the Los Angeles Chargers (1-4) at SoFi Stadium on Sunday before their bye next week.
