By little surprise to anyone across the NFL, the Jacksonville Jaguars have officially named Trevor Lawrence their starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Houston Texans:

Lawrence was the number one overall pick by the Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft in April and was hailed as one of the best QB prospects ever. Gardner Minshew was basically his only competition for the starting role. To Lawrence, it wasn't really much of a surprise either because the main goal remains the same: winning.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity; I’m grateful for it,” Lawrence said, via the Jaguars' team website. “It doesn’t really change anything, though. We still have the same task in front of us. We’ve got to get a lot better individually, as a team, as an offense. It brings some clarity, which is nice, going forward. But it really doesn’t change much.”

While the Jaguars have lost both of their preseason games so far, Lawrence has thrown the ball well. He completed 14 of 23 passes for 113 yards against the Saints on Monday, but he's yet to throw his first NFL touchdown. Overall in two appearances, the quarterback has completed 20 of his 32 attempts.

Urban Meyer and Jacksonville are easing him in though with a long season ahead. It's well known what Lawrence is capable of, it's just a matter of getting the reps in. Heading into the Jags' season opener on September 12th, the last top pick in the draft to actually win his NFL debut was David Carr in 2002. Lawrence will be looking to end that trend.

Lawrence will be without former college teammate and fellow 2021 draftee Travis Etienne for the entire 2021 season though after he suffered a Lisfranc injury in preseason action. Nevertheless, Trevor Lawrence will be poised to lead the Jaguars to a winning season.
