The Jacksonville Jaguars are nearing an agreement with former quarterback Tim Tebow. To play tight end. Seriously?

Reports first circulated in late-April suggesting Tebow had lobbied for a workout with the Jags as he attempted to launch an NFL comeback as a tight end. The news made waves at the time because, well, of course it did. Tebow has a tendency to attract quite a bit of attention. Still, was it really likely the Jaguars would actually sign Tebow?

This is a guy who has not played in the NFL since 2012. Put everything else aside for a second. That is a long time to be away from a game that demands a tremendous amount of physicality.

Moreover, does Tebow (33 years old) still have the motor and skills to really be a productive player, even if the transition to tight end were to go decently. Well, Urban Meyer and the Jags appear to think so.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Monday the Jaguars were “planning” to sign Tebow to a one-year deal. Nothing has been finalized yet, but there appears to be enough momentum for Rapoport to suggest a deal could get done before the end of the week.

What's the big idea here, Urban Meyer? This just seems utterly ridiculous.

On the one hand, it's not as though this automatically guarantees Tebow a spot on the 53-man roster out of camp. Some might then say “Why not give him a shot?” After all, the Jaguars are a young roster. Maybe Tebow can provide some leadership during camp and inspire the young guys with his work ethic.

Well, let's take a couple things under consideration.

Firstly, this decision might take an opportunity away from other players who are more desperate to continue their careers and have recent playing experience in the NFL. Additionally, the Jags already have a deep group of tight ends.

Michael DiRocco of ESPN noted there are already five TEs on Jacksonville's roster, including Chris Manhertz, James O'Shaughnessy, Ben Ellefson, Tyler Davis and fifth-round pick. None of these guys are exactly standouts at the position. Still, it seems a little bit ridiculous for the Jaguars to pursue a converted tight end when they are trying to evaluate a bunch of other guys.

Listen, respect to Tebow for chasing an opportunity. It's not his fault he wants to play again and is willing to move to a new position for another shot in the NFL. All the power to him.

But this just seems like a ridiculous sideshow, as far as the Jaguars are concerned. Yeah, the Tebow-Meyer relationship looms large. At the end of the day, however, every roster spot matters for a Jaguars team desperate to build a more sustained culture of winning.

Is signing Tebow really a move to suggest that kind of direction? Maybe, but it seems pretty preposterous right now.
