Houston Rockets star shooting guard James Harden’s defense has been an incredible weak point of his game during the seven years he's been in the league. As he's become a prominent player in the league and the face of the Rockets franchise, his work on the defensive end has been increasingly scrutinized.

Harden’s offensive ability is unarguably at an elite level but when asked to engage defensively, the focus and effort has just never seemed to be there.

This summer, Dwight Howard left Houston in order to join his hometown Atlanta Hawks. The spotlight now fully belongs to Harden once more and Rockets fans hope that he can become a true leader. They know what we can do on offense, but the one way to lead this team is to set an example on the defensive end.

According to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, Harden promised the necessary improvement at media day on Friday.

“I have to be better. I will be better. I'm more than capable,” Harden said.

Harden led the Rockets with averages of 29 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists last year, but his defensive woes and the shortcomings of Houston resulted in him being omitted from any All-NBA team selections, which is unheard of.

“I know I can play defense and offense. Last year was a blur. We all go through it in life,” he told Feigen.
