During his coaching days, George Karl was known to be one of the more outspoken coaches in the league. He made headlines with feuds he's had with star players in the past, such as Carmelo Anthony and DeMarcus Cousins, just to name a few.

Not only did Karl speak out against his own players, but also some who never even played for him. One of them being Jason Terry, who claimed Karl told him during his Arizona sophomore year, that he would never make it to the NBA.

“When I was a sophomore at the University of Arizona, I used to work George Karl’s basketball camp in Seattle. I was at a banquet, George walked up, he approached me, shook my hand and then whispered over to me and said, ‘You’ll never make it to the NBA. You’re never serious. You’re a joke.’ That’s what he told me. Word for word.”

“And so I always kept that in the back of my mind, and every time I either faced a George Karl’s team or when I’d see him, I always had a little extra motivation. Yeah, no question. But that’s just George. I mean, if you know George, you know, for better or worse, that’s just him. That’s his personality. And he’s always been like that and I can see why guys had a tough time playing with him or for him.”

Terry would have the last laugh, not only making it to the NBA, but winning a title and a Sixth Man of the Year award during his 18-year career. He now plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, serving as the team's veteran presence and locker room leader for former teammate, and current Bucks head coach, Jason Kidd.

He certainly used Karl's words as motivation to strive to achieve his goal of playing at the highest level. As it turned out, he became a reliable gunner from beyond the three-point arc, providing instant offense off the bench. Terry continues to be viewed as one of the most respected veterans in the league today.
