Former Duke Blue Devils star and Chicago Bulls guard Jay Williams isn’t at all surprised with news of corruption in college basketball. After all, he’s been part of it himself.

The topic of fraud in the amateur ranks has been brought to the light once again of late with the FBI investigating NCAA basketball programs for illegal recruitment activities. Louisville Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino was already fired by the Cardinals in connection to the said investigation despite no announced concrete evidence of his involvement – yet.

While appearing on Outside The Lines on Wednesday, Williams revealed that he was among those who attempted and succeeded to pay $250,000 to Pat Barrett, Kevin Love’s AAU coach. This happened when Love was still playing for the UCLA Bruins. This happened back when Williams was still a recruiter for Ceruzzi Sports and Entertainment.

“There were a lot of dealings that were being made that people didn’t know about. There was a lot of money being exchanged. I know for a fact — there was a reported story from Yahoo! Sports back in 2009 — I know that we gave an AAU coach for a guy named Kevin Love who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. We gave him over $250,000. Now, at the time, we were also giving other players money because you were allowed to give players money through their AAU programs.”

Ceruzzi Sports and Entertainment would later be investigated by the NBA for its shady dealings with college players.

This narrative of corruption in college sports is a recurring one. Cases come and go, but the problem doesn’t seem to vanish for good. Revelations like the one made by Williams just make the issue even more convoluted and look more problematic. One thing for sure is that the end of it is far from being permanently solved.
