Utah Jazz point guard Dante Exum underwent successful surgery on his left shoulder Tuesday according to a press release posted by the team’s public relations Twitter account.

Dante Exum hurt his shoulder during a preseason game against the Phoenix Suns early this month. Exum initially didn’t want to go under the knife if there were other options available for him to avoid it, but upon further deliberation, he opted to have the surgery.

While the Jazz have yet to release a timetable for Exum’s return, it’s likely that the Australian will miss the entire season as he recovers from the surgery. If that is the case, it will be the second time he’ll be sidelined for an entire campaign. Exum didn’t play the whole 2015-16 season with an ACL injury.

Exum is still just 22 years old, but his inability to stay healthy and the slow progress of his game could be factors why the Jazz will eventually let him go next year, as he’ll become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2018.

Drafted No. 5 overall by the Jazz in the 2014 draft, Exum has career averages of only 5.4 points, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 rebounds in 148 games played.
