During the Oklahoma City Thunder's 98-89 win over the Utah Jazz on Monday night, Russell Westbrook got into a heated verbal altercation with a Jazz fan in which he threatened the fan and his wife.

After the game, Westbrook said that the fan made a verbal taunt toward him, which was what provoked his response.

Following the incident, Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell took to social media to release a statement in which he said that he will do whatever he can to make Vivint Smart Home Arena a more friendly environment:

As Mitchell points out, this is not the first time something like this has happened in Utah, and not even the first time with Westbrook, as the Thunder star has had altercations with Jazz fans in the past.

The 22-year-old added that he won't just be taking action to change things within Utah's playing center, but across the country as a whole, as Mitchell will begin his quest in combating racism.

Mitchell is in his second season in the NBA and is averaging 23.5 points, 4.1 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals over 33.8 minutes per game while shooting 42.3 percent from the floor, 33.6 percent from 3-point range and 79.5 percent from the free-throw line.

The Elmsford, N.Y. native, who played his collegiate basketball at the University of Louisville, was originally selected by the Jazz in the first round (13th pick overall) of the 2017 NBA Draft.

He went on to finish second in Rookie of the Year voting last season after registering 20.5 points, 3.7 boards, 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals across 33.4 minutes a night.
