Utah Jazz shooting guard Donovan Mitchell is averaging 21.8 points per game over his first 143 NBA games entering Friday.
According to Basketball Reference, only four players have averaged more points per game in their first two seasons than Mitchell over the last 20 years.
Those four players are LeBron James, Vince Carter, Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid. Not a bad group for Donovan Mitchell to be in.
Donovan Mitchell burst onto the scene last year and hasn't let up since.
The Jazz selected Mitchell with the 13th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft out of the University of Louisville. Everyone knew the high-flyer was an electric scorer in college, but no one thought he would be scoring the ball this well in the NBA so quickly.
Mitchell has taken the next step in his development this season for Utah. After getting off to a slow start, the New York native has rounded into form nicely and is leading the Jazz to wins in the rugged Western Conference on a nightly basis.
Mitchell averaged 20.5 points per game his rookie season. The 22-year-old is putting up 23.6 points this year while shooting 42.6 percent from the field, 33.9 percent from beyond the arc and 79.6 percent from the free-throw line.
Mitchell is also averaging 4.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists this season.
