D’Angelo Russell’s unexpected move to the Brooklyn Nets caught a lot of fans by surprise — including Jeremy Lin, who is the team's undisputed starter at point guard, who may  now have to contend for his spot with the entry of the 21-year-old.

Instead of feeling that he now has competition, the Harvard product made it known, via Greg Logan of Newsday, that he doesn’t mind having him on board, and even referred to Russell as a “good kid.”

Lin even admitted that he also has some things to lean from him, but more importantly, wants Russell to feel that he’s part of their family.

“I think at the end of the day, he’s a really good kid. He has a good heart, and he’s a tremendous basketball player. Once he meets our team and gets in our locker room, I’m pretty sure it will be a seamless transition. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from him as well, and hopefully he learns from me. What we want to do is create that family atmosphere where we’re kind of pushing each other, keeping each other accountable, helping each other.”

Lin’s statement goes to show how matured he is a professional now. He understands that trades are inevitable and that more talented players may be brought in to their team to improve their roster further. The arrival of Russell can even be considered as a challenge for him not to be complacent about his standing with the team, and to always give his best.

It’s still unclear what the exact role of the former Los Angeles Lakers guard will be with his new team, but it can be expected that he and Lin could be fielded in together depending on matchups.

There’s a big chance he could play behind the eight-year veteran, and if that will be the case, it will be interesting to see how he will accept it and how he’ll adjust to coming off the bench.
