Santa Cruz Warriors guard Jeremy Lin has been outspoken against a rise in violence against Asian Americans.

Lin sent out a message of support after an Atlanta shooting that left six Asian women dead at multiple massage parlors:

“This is sooo heartbreaking…praying for our world,”  Jeremy Lin tweeted late Tuesday night. “To my Asian American family, please take time to grieve but know youre loved, seen and IMPORTANT. We have to keep standing up, speaking out, rallying together and fighting for change. We cannot lose hope!!”

Authorities first responded to a call regarding a shooting at Young's Asian Massage parlor. Four people were killed in that incident, including two Asian women.

Two more shootings occurred shortly thereafter, one at Gold Spa and the other at Aromatherapy Spa. Both were in the Atlanta area. Four women were found dead with gunshot wounds, all of them Asian. This is in the midst of Jeremy Lin advocating so strongly for the Asian population.

There has been a substantial rise in hate crimes perpetrated against Asian Americans in the past calendar year. Even as far back as August, the Stop AAPI Hate organization–a conglomerate of Asian American advocacy groups–reported more than 2,500 racist or discriminatory acts against Asian Americans.

Overall hate crimes fell in 2020, but crimes against Asian Americans rose 150 percent, per a recent PBS News report. Jeremy Lin himself has been subjected to bigotry. He revealed he had been called “coronavirus” during a G League game, with the G League later identifying the player in question.

Other NBA stars and athletes sent messages decrying Tuesday's shootings. Lin offered condolences as well, but also stated it is important the Asian American community continue to have hope.
